The French President, Nicolas Sarkozy, has welcomed the Moroccan proposal for autonomy in Western Sahara as part of a political solution under the auspices of the United Nations.
The statement issued Thursday in Paris said that Moroccan law applies to the Sahara, pending such a solution.
Nicolas Sarkozy expressed his wish, in the case of Aminatou Haidar, the Saharawi dissident whose return home has been authorized by Rabat for “humanitarian considerations” as Morocco, “in its tradition of openness and generosity “give back to the applicant her passport upon her arrival on Moroccan territory, the Moroccan News Agency (MAP) quoted the statement as saying.
The statement from the Elysée Palace also recalled that the French leader had been informed about the Moroccan government’s agreement on Haminatou Haidar by King Mohammed VI, on December 17.
