June 17, 2008

Gabonese music star, Pierre Claver Akendengué will stage a concert next Saturday in Libreville on the 21 June World Music Day. This show will be the star’s maiden performance in Libreville. Akendengué, 66, became Gabon’s most famous artist after he recorded his latest album, “Goree” in 2007.

During the event, he will be accompanied by four other Gabonese senior musicians, namely Hilarion Ngueme with whom he recorded his first albums, Joseph Makaya, alias Mackjoss, Martin Rompavet, and Claude Damas Ozimo.

The growing music star of Gabon, Annie-Flore Batchiellilys who won the best junior women prize of the South African Kora Awards 2002, will also grace the day.

Musicologist and singer-songwriter, Akendengué is a great genius of music, a virtuosic of African music.

He intends to honor African music and stand as its advocate during this 27th edition of World Music Day celebrated in over 100 countries and 340 cities worldwide.

Over 10,000 concerts are scheduled across the world on this Music Day, Marie Lusteau of Libreville French cultural centre (CCF), affirmed.

The celebration, which brings together hundreds of music lovers around improvised street concerts, was launched in France in 1982 by Maurice Fleuret and spread by former Socialist minister, Jack Lang.
