Gambia Government Increases Fuel Prices

May 22, 2008

The Gambian ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs has announced an upward revision of fuel prices with effect from Tuesday, says a press release issued by the ministry in Banjul.

According to the release; the increase is in response to the rising cost of fuel in the world market.

The release indicates that super petrol has been increased from 30 Dalasis (US$1.5) to 33 Dalasis (US$1.65) per liter, while diesel has been increased from 28 Dalasis (US$1.4) to 32 Dalasis (US$1.6) per liter. Paraffin oil has also been increased from 21 Dalasis (US$1.05) to 26 Dalasis (US$1.3) per liter).

While this increase has not come as a surprise to many Gambians, in view of the increase in the price of oil in the world market, but it is certainly going to have some negative consequences on the situation. Already, there has been a sharp increase in the prices of all basic commodities, including food items.

Therefore, any increase in the price of fuel would lead to more increases in prices of such commodities as well as transport fares.
