Ghana’s First Lady, Mrs. Ernestina Naadu Mills has launched a nationwide project aimed at providing free school uniforms for needy pupils in deprived communities to enable them enjoy free compulsory basic education.
She launched the program at Kow Larbikrom, near Kasoa, some 25 kilometers south-west of Accra, the capital.
Mrs Mills said 1.6 million school uniforms would be distributed among the children in 77 deprived communities across the country.
The cost of the uniforms is estimated at $15 million and distribution of the uniforms will start in January 2010.
Mrs. Mills said the launch was in fulfillment of President John Evans Atta Mills’ 2008 campaign promise to support needy children in deprived communities with free school uniforms.
She said the government had plans to increase the capitation grant and expand the school feeding program to encourage more Ghanaian children to access basic education for free.
She stressed that she and her husband will work harder in 2010 to ensure the ‘Better Ghana’ he promised Ghanaians during the 2008 election campaign.
The project was delayed because the production of the school uniform materials was made locally and factories had to adjust their machines before producing them.
