Ghana: 2007 Was an Eventful Year

January 1, 2008

The year 2007 has been described by many Ghanaians as the most eventful year in the social, economic and political annals of the West African country, APA learns here on Monday.

First, the country happily welcomed back home Dr. Kofi Annan, the former Secretary General of the United Nations after he had served the international body 10 years in that capacity.

This was followed by the 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations in which former President Olusengu Obasanjo of Nigeria and President Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe, as well as other dignitaries across the globe attended the 50th anniversary of Ghana’s freedom from British domination on March 3, 1957.

However, the celebrations were shortly followed by the death and burial of Madam Fathia Nkrumah, Egyptian widow of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, first president of Ghana and one of the greatest Pan- Africanists.

The burial of Fathia Nkrumah at Nkrumah Mausoleum in Accra brought many of Dr. Nkrumah’s former party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP) activists together after almost 40 years of hibernation.

This is because most of the activists feared victimization when Nkrumah was overthrown in 1966 by the National Liberation Council military junta.

Shortly after the burial of Madam Fathia, Ghana hosted the European-African Business Summit where the topical Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs) became a hot issue across the continent.

In addition, there was the African Union (AU) Summit in Accra which was described by political analysts as “Grand Debate” on the clarion call for a continental government was held.

About 48 heads of state out of the 53 attended the summit.

Another significant milestone was the fact that political parties in Ghana have successfully gone through the process of selecting presidential candidates to battle for the December 7, 2008 presidential and parliamentary elections as current President John Agyekum Kufuor ends his second and final term of office in December next year.

The year culminated with Ghana gearing up to host the month long African Nations Cup finals from January 20, 2008.
