March 5, 2008
Ghana is feverishly preparing to celebrate her 51st Independence Anniversary celebrations on Thursday, a few months before the end of President John Agyekum Kufuor’s mandate.
Thousands of military, police, school children and fire officers have been undergoing parade rehearsals to display at the Independence Square in Accra, the venue for the event.
President Kufuor is expected to give a speech at the ceremony which is billed to start early Thursday.
Last year’s 50th anniversary was attended by Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe and Olusegun Obasanjo and former Nigerian President.
Ghana goes to polls on December 7 this year to elect a new president to replace President Kufuor whose second four-year term in office expires in December.
