Ghanaians are feverishly preparing to celebrate their 53rd Independence Anniversary on Saturday, dedicated to the memory of Ghana’s first President Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
Although the announcement had been made some weeks ago that the anniversary is in honor of Nkrumah, Ghanaians are putting in place various activities to mark the anniversary.
President John Evans Atta Mills, a die-hard admirer of Nkrumah, is expected to address a parade of military, police, navy, schools and organized labor at the Independence Square in Accra on Saturday.
Other activities to be undertaken include national prayers, both Christian and Muslim with fasting, awards ceremony to honor hard working Ghanaians and a national quiz competition.
Ghana gained political independence from Britain on March 6, 1957 and was declared by Dr. Nkrumah at the Independence Square in Accra, and since then the country holds the Independence Day celebrations there.
