The Ghanaian government on Friday took a giant step in equipping the Ghana Police Service to fight highway robberies when it donated 24 cross country vehicles to the service at a ceremony in Accra.
Ghana’s Vice President John Dramani Mahama presented the vehicles on Friday to Ghana’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) Paul Tawiah Quaye, who said the vehicles will enable police deal with highway robbers who have adopted new tactics in their operations.
IGP Quaye said the main challenge the police faced in crime combat was the lack of modern vehicles, adding that the vehicles had come at a time robbery on the highways were on the increase.
The vehicles are Toyota Land Cruisers, which are normally used by government ministers and presidential convoy, therefore their donation to the police will bring much relieve to them to effectively patrol the roads at night, he added.
Vice President Mahama, for his part, explained that government had an intention to equip the police with vehicles and other modern crime combat facilities to enable them protect Ghanaian citizens especially at a time Ghana is getting ready to pump oil in December.
