Governments in Africa Urged to Remove Trade Barriers
October 31, 2008
African governments should remove trade and visa barriers, promote access to credit finance and set up innovation centers, the director of Brenthurst Foundation based in South Africa, Greg Mills, said on Thursday.
Mills was speaking at an international conference attended by academicians, policy makers, entrepreneurs and civil society representatives in Kampala.
The conference also heard from development partners that African countries are only good at competing against each other in soliciting for aid by using the language the donors like.
Money which will foster enterprise led growth is not from the donors but investors and buyers in the global market, the conference was told.
Betty Maina, an executive director for Association of Kenyan Manufacturers said African government should focus on socially excluded groups like women because they constitute an enormous force and can be potentially destructive unless they are empowered and employed.
She recommended that appropriate technologies be availed to them and time saving infrastructure and services be placed at their disposal.
