Governor General of Canada, on the Death of Oscar E. Peterson

December 25, 2007

My husband Jean-Daniel Lafond and I were deeply saddened to learn of Oscar Peterson’s passing away. It was with much emotion that we saw the courage he evoked while on stage, even not that long ago, and in spite of his health problems.

Having lived fifteen years in the same neighborhood as the Peterson family, Little Burgundy, we know just how important he has been to his community. He made us all proud; a powerful source of inspiration, a role model not only to the Black community of which he was a hero, but also to citizens of Montreal and all Canadians.

Mr. Peterson was a national treasure, a Companion to the Order of Canada, and one of our greatest ambassadors of Canadian jazz, making us all proud on the international stage.

Through his work, he has left us a rich legacy that will inspire many generations to come.

We offer our sincerest condolences to his family and loved ones.
