Governor Schwarzenegger Thanks All the People Helping With California’s Wildfires

October 24, 2007

In a press conference held today California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger started by thanking the dedication and selflessness of the people directly fighting the fires. He expressed gratitude for the long 36 or 48 hour shifts they were working and for risking their lives to protect the people and property.

He mentioned how the lessons from 2003 had been learned and the resources had been put in place for this kind of incident. He thanked the states of Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Colorado, Washington State, Wyoming, North Carolina, New Mexico and New York for sending help and support.

He announced that over the next few days One Stop Shops would be opening. These would help people with tasks like replacing documents, claiming assistance, looking for housing and dealing with insurance amongst other things

The Governor went on to thank President Bush for his fast response to the request to declare a state of emergency and for the federal aid that will follow. He commented on how, unlike in previous disasters, the responses have been immediate and the various departments are working together. He appreciated the way local, state and federal officials were cooperating with each other.

He finished by mentioning that President Bush will be touring the area tomorrow to see the devastation for himself.
