Twenty-two of the 28 governors of Nigeria’s ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP) met on Tuesday to review the state of the nation and resolved that ailing President Umaru Yar’Adua was recuperating fast, just as the legal tussle aimed at forcing the president to resign has commenced.
The governors, who met under the auspices of the PDP Governors’ Forum, said the president had spoken by telephone to key members of the government, including those in the legislature and the executive.
The Chairman of the Forum, Governor Olusola Saraki of Kwara State said after the meeting that the health of the president was being politicized and urged mischief makers to desist.
He said it was uncharitable to make the ailment of the president a political issue and he urged Nigerians to have confidence that the country had not slid backwards.
The governor said that the forum also flayed the attempt by a Nigerian to bomb a US airline but was unhappy with the action the government of the United States took, especially the classification of Nigeria as a country to watch in terrorism.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and a human rights activist, Femi Falana, appeared before the Abuja High Court on Tuesday to ask the court to force the president to resign.
The case was heard briefly and the court gave the government’s counsel time to respond but no date had been fixed for the hearing.
