Governors of Two States in Nigeria And Niger Sign Cooperation Document

The governor of Nigeria’s northern Jigawa State, Sule Lamido and his counterpart from Maradi in Niger Republic, Aliyu Muazu, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to boost agriculture and health, among others in their states.

According to a communiqué issued in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State at the end of a three-day visit of the Maradi governor on Sunday, the two states will collaborate in the areas of health, agriculture, education, environment, water resources and security.

The communiqué said that the two states would also partner to eradicate poliomyelitis, measles as well as animal diseases, including Avian Influenza (bird flu) and plant pests.

It said that the two states would also cooperate to develop agriculture through research and development of sorghum, cassava, cow pea, groundnut, millet and wheat.

According to the communiqué, educational development was also part of the bilateral agreement and that it would enhance the teaching of French and English in the two states through students’ exchange programs.

French is the official language of Niger Republic while Nigeria is Anglophone.

The two states also agreed to monitor and communicate to each other the movement of pastoralists, while developing cattle routes and grazing reserves to check clashes between farmers and herdsmen that frequently occur.

The communiqué said that an implementation committee would be set up and that it would be made up of representatives of the two states.
