beninGraves at a cemetery in the Beninese capital have been vandalized with their human remains desecrated in suspected acts of fetishes linked to Voodoo.

Police in Porto Novo on Friday said over 100 graves were damaged, as corpses were beheaded and internal body organs taken away by the vandals.

The police claimed that a mason had discovered the graves upon his return to the Dangbo cemetery to retrieve a forgotten tool.

He had reported his discovery to the police who said they had begun investigations into the overnight desecrations.

Meanwhile, relatives of the dead whose corpses have been vandalized have been disturbed by the turn of events.

Many of them believe in reincarnation and the mutilation of corpses is viewed with a sense of foreboding by people.

Witnesses said they believe missing body parts were used as lucky charms in voodoo rituals.

Voodoo is a religion practiced by 40 percent of the Beninese population.
