Captain Moussa Dadis Camara, the head of the ruling military junta in Guinea has reportedly been “evacuated to Morocco,” following the alleged attempt on his life in Conakry by his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Aboubacar Toumba Diakite.
On late Thursday evening, there were persistent rumors in Conakry about Capt. Dadis Camara’s health after the attempt on his life. According to various reports, he was seriously injured in the head, which was denied by the authorities who called such reports “unfounded”.
The head of the junta seized power in a bloodless coup on 23 December 2008, immediately after former President Lansana Conte’s death.
The new regime has been severely criticized by the international community infuriated by the mass killings perpetrated on 28 September during a protest rally of the opposition at the main stadium of the capital.
According to well-informed sources, human losses were reported on both sides, including the death of Lieutenant Mokambo, Toumba Diakite’s assistant.
Aboubacar Toumba Diakite is considered the mastermind of the punitive expedition against the opposition on 28 September 2009, during which over 150 protesters were killed, according to the United Nations.
Since then, Defence Minister, General Sekouba Konate and his colleague of the Presidential Security, Jean Claude Pivi had been urging Dadis to arrest him, but the latter had apparently ignored the advice.
In a statement issued on Friday, the junta called for calm, adding that the situation was under control.
Sources close to the presidency have told APA that Capt. Dadis Camara was rushed out of the country, along with Deputy Minister for the special services, the repression of drug trafficking and organized crime, Moussa Tiegnro Camara, who was also wounded in the shoot out.
Other sources indicate that the Koundara military camp was under control, adding however that Toumba’s loyalists were still holed up somewhere in the capital.
Defence Minister, Gen. Sekouba Konate, the most influential figure of the junta after Dadis Camara, who was in Lebanon during the incident is said to be rushing home on a special flight.
