Guinean Prime Minister Removed From Office
May 21, 2008
The Guinean consensus Prime Minister, Lansana Kouyaté, was removed from office on Tuesday by President Lansana Conte, Guinean state television has announced.
Lansana Kouyaté was nominated on February 27, 2007 at the end of a two-month-long period of political and social unrest.
He was nominated out of a short-list of four people proposed by civil society organizations, unions and employers’ organizations to lead a consensus government.
The “full authority” he was enjoying as Prime Minister was not always considered favorably by the head of state, observers underscored.
The difference took a new turn when the government made the decision to repatriate French national, Chantal Cole, who was an adviser to President Conte, in charge of communications at the presidential palace.
Another bone of contention was when the Prime Minister recently decided to hand over the management of “abandoned” luxury hotels to the Libyans. The decision was opposed by President Conte.
