Gunmen Kill BBC Contributor in Southern Somalia

June 8, 2008

A BBC reporter in Kismayo, 500km south of Mogadishu, Nasteh Dahir Farah was killed in Kismayo on Saturday evening by unknown gunmen, residents told APA.
Mr. Farah was shot and seriously wounded on his way home by unidentified armed men but later died in the hospital minutes after being taken there.

Farah was the second journalist killed in Somalia this year alone, while eight other Somali journalists were murdered last year.

Hundreds of Somali journalists have fled the country and are now living either abroad or in neighboring countries as asylum seekers.

Somalia had been plunged in anarchy after the overthrow of former president Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, when warlords used their clan based militias to fall over the dictator then fought each other for power, leading to constant inter-clan war which left thousands killed and millions displaced
