High Speed Cyclone Jokwe Kills 1, Destroys 500 Homes in Mozambique
March 10, 2008
One person was killed on Sunday as high-speed Tropical Cyclone Jokwe smashed Mozambique’s northern coastal areas destroying over 500 homes on its journey to the southern parts along the Mozambique channel, weather authorities told APA.
The head of Mozambique’s National Institute of Meteorology, INAM, Mussa Mustafa said in an interview that Jokwe will re-intensify on Monday with the likelihood of causing further havoc in central Mozambique.
“We expect more rains in Pebane, Maganja da Costa and the port city of Quelimane (in central Zambezia province) tomorrow (Monday), the weather will be very bad particularly on shipping, a lot of damage has already been inflicted where the Cyclone has swept through”, he said.
Mozambique is vulnerable to cyclones and natural disasters every season.
Last month, Cyclone Ivan smashed Madagascar after taking the full brunt of the ferocious winds, killing 84 people there and affecting 322,000 others, but lost its strength before striking Mozambique.
