Houston Chronicle Endorses Obama, McCain in Texas Primaries
February 16, 2008
The Houston Chronicle, after conversations with presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, has endordsed Barack Obama in the Texas Democratic primary and John McCain in the Republican primary.
The Chronicle believes Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois is best-qualified by life experience, skill and temperament to be the standard bearer for his party. In a conference call, Obama told the Chronicle editorial board that “more than any other candidate, I can bridge some of the partisan as well as racial and religious divides that have developed in this country that prevent us from getting things done.”
Bested rival Mitt Romney said of Sen. John McCain, “This is a man capable of leading our country at a dangerous hour.” The Houston Chronicle agrees … As a naval aviator and prisoner of war during the Vietnam conflict, McCain proved his courage, honor and resolve beyond question. If years of deprivation and torture could not break him, the stress and challenge of an international crisis are not likely to.
