125px-Flag_of_Rwanda.svg3The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network (EHAHRD-Net) has called on the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) to ask the Government of Rwanda to remove all criminal sanctions of press offenses and introduce legal reforms in line with national, regional and international standards.

Presenting a paper on behalf of the network, EHAHRD-Net chairperson Hassan Shire Sheikh called on the African Commission to ask the regime in Kigali to end the arrest and harassment of journalists.

Furthermore, the network asked the African Commission to call on the Sudanese Government to ensure that the provisions of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement on freedom of expression and the media is significantly revised and by repealing all legislation at odds with the provisions of the interim national Constitution on freedom of expression.
