In the Face of Heavy Setbacks LTTE Turns to Killing Innocent Civilians
April 26, 2008
President Mahinda Rajapaksa of Sri Lanka, who extended his condolences to the members of the bereaved families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured, said the attack clearly showed the terrorists were not ready to abandon violence and destruction even though the Government had repeatedly pledged its commitment to peace.
While condemning the brutal terror attack of the LTTE which took the lives of 26 civilians injuring more than 40 President Rajapaksa said that this repeated incident of the terrorists clearly indicate that Tiger terrorists are restoring to killing innocent civilians in the face of heavy setbacks on the battlefield.
A 10-year of child and a Buddhist monk were among the dead, according to hospital sources.
This bomb attack targeting civilians follows the April 4 suicide bomb attack that assassinated a senior minister of the Government, as he was flagging off a marathon, killing 14 and injuring at least 80 persons, which included a large number of athletes and sports personalities.
The LTTE, an internationally condemned terrorist organization, has been facing many setbacks in battle with the Sri Lankan armed forces in recent weeks, the President’s Media Unit observed.
President Rajapaksa requests the public to be more vigilant and assist the security forces in foiling LTTE terrorists’ disruptive plans. He highlighted that this was the latest in a series of indiscriminate attacks by the LTTE aimed at civilians.
