India Helps Mauritius in Cybercrime Fight

A team of experts from the Computer Emergency Response Team of India has just arrived in the Mauritius capital, Port Louis, to assist the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications (MITT) improve computer security readiness in the country following a request from minister Etienne Sinatambou during a visit to India last November.

In a communiqué issued Friday by the director of the Information and Communication Technologies Authority (ICTA), Trilock Dwarka, the aim of the visit is to upgrade the national Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-MU), a system which has proved its efficacy in India.

The communiqué adds that CERT-MU has been a priority project earmarked under the Mauritian ICT Strategic Programme with a view to protect the internet infrastructure of the Island by coordinating defense against and response to cyber-attacks.

It will also analyze and reduce cyber-threats and vulnerabilities, disseminate cyber-threats warning information and coordinate incident response activities.

Furthermore, Dwarka writes that CERT-MU will interact with ministries and government departments, the private sector and the research community to disseminate cyber-security information to the public.

The unit will also deal with identity usurpation, the posting of pornographic blogs on the web and illegal betting on international matches on the internet.

The communiqué indicates that the two main suppliers of internet connections, Emtel and Cell Plus, have jointly already prepared an action plan for the Prevention of Pornography on the Net and Cybercrimes. The plan will be reviewed by the Indian specialists.

According to the communiqué, in the immediate term, the project is expected to create permanent employment for computer and information system graduates, while in the long term, more direct and indirect jobs will be created to sustain operational resilience and help organizations improve their operational resilience management capabilities.

The Indian mission will leave Mauritius next 22nd May.
