Indian Railways Employing New Generation Regenerative Electric Locomotives

December 6, 2007

Indian Railways are now employing new generation electric locomotives which have a regenerative feature to generate electric power during braking.

The locomotives use three phase propulsion technology to convert kinetic energy to electric power during braking.

Forty such locomotives are part of the Northern Railway fleet. They work in the prestigious Rajdhani / Shatabdi express and other important Mail/Express trains. The energy generated during braking by these locomotives equals about 2 million kilowatt hours.
