Inmates At Baghram Air Base Near Kabul Allowed Face to Face Meetings with Loved Ones

September 24, 2008

Inmates held at Baghram air base near Kabul are being allowed for the first time to meet face to face with their loved ones.

The 60-minute reunions are being made possible under an initiative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and U.S. military authorities in Afghanistan.

The ICRC says it will reimburse travel expenses for families visiting Kabul and provide transportation from the Afghan capital to Bagram.

Since January this year families have been able to communicate with relatives held at Bagram via videophone from Kabul. The ICRC says some 1,500 calls have been made so far.
