Inmates in Prison 5 in South Kyrgyzstan Go on Hunger Strike

September 16, 2008

Inmates of prison number five in Osh, south Kyrgyzstan, have gone on hunger strike on Monday demanding restoration of an adequate supply of food and essential commodities.

Prison number five has experienced serious problems supplying inmates with food, soap and matches, Ravshan Gapirov, human rights activist, told Ferghana.ru.

He also said that inmates have been virtually left without food for three days in a row, which triggered the hunger strike.

Administration of the prison promised to resolve the conflict peacefully.

Riots and strikes have become routine in Kyrgyzstan. The last one in prison 16 near capital Bishkek was deadly. Two prison staff and two inmates were killed in prison riot on August 14. The incident entailed dismissals of the top officials. First, chairman of the Main Penitentiaries Administration and head of the prison number 16 were fired. Later, the head of the Penitentiaries Administration and Minister of Justice Marat Kaiypov were dismissed.
