International Committee of Red Cross to Aid Zimbabwe Victims

May 15, 2008

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has offered to assist political violence victims in one of Zimbabwe’s most affected provinces, APA learned on Thursday.

The ICRC sent a delegation Thursday to meet Zimbabwe government officials in the worst hit Mashonaland Central province.

The delegation, led by Zacharia Maiga, met a Zimbabwe government team headed by the province’s governor, Ephraim Masawi, to request permission to help victims of violence between supporters of the ruling ZANU PF party and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC).

Masawi said teams from the Zimbabwean government were currently assessing the victims’ needs, after which the government would invite international help.

“Teams from the Department of Social Welfare are currently on the ground to assess the needs of the victims. We will allow them to complete their work before asking for international assistance,” said Masawi.

Zimbabwe has experienced an upsurge in cases of politically motivated violence since elections held on March 29.
