The third edition of the International Environmental Film Festival (FIFEN) (3-8 June) has started in the Martial Arts Academy of Niamey, the Nigerien capital. This year’s five-day edition is themed on “Africa and its knowledge in water management”.

Many African artists and experts are expected to take part in this festival which is associated, this year, with the International Water and Cinema Events (RIEC) “in a bid to highlight its projects”, Nigerien Culture minister, Oumarou Hadary, said.

The RIEC is a triennial international water film competition held on the sidelines of the World Water Forum. For this year’s edition, the FIFEN welcomes the African selection of films in contest for the next RIEC edition slated to take place in Istanbul, Turkey in March 2009.

Three categories of film- documentaries, fiction, scientific and pedagogic spots of sensitizing- will contest the nine prizes up for grabs.

Public conferences and audiovisual screenings on the importance of water are part of the festival agenda in the different cultural centers of Niamey.

Launched in 2006, the FIFEN aims at using the cinema to create an African framework of meetings and debates on environmental issues to bring nations together.
