The International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, has announced that it has helped Liberia to select the Canadian company Manitoba Hydro International (MHI) for a five-year management contract to help overhaul electricity services in the capital Monrovia and connect at least 30,000 new customers.
According to a press statement received by APA Monday, MHI was chosen from among several companies like NTE of Norway and Siemens of Germany which submitted proposals for the Liberia Electricity Corporation (LEC) contract.
Under the five-year contract beginning July 1, 2010, MHI will help improve LEC’s operational and financial performance.
With US$50 million of donor funds, MHI will also help rebuild Monrovia’s electricity system and expand access to electricity in the city.
According to the release, funds for the reconstruction and expansion of the system are being provided by the government of Norway, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the World Bank.
The statement quotes Liberia’s Lands, Mines and Energy Minister, Dr. Eugene Shannon extending “sincere thanks and appreciation to the Norwegian government and other donors for their support.
The Liberian civil war which ended in 2003 destroyed the country’s electricity infrastructure.
