Iranian Media: 8 Killed, 66 Wounded in Mosque Blast

April 13, 2008

flag_of_iranIranian media report a bomb blast in a mosque in southern Iran killed eight people and wounded 66 others. The Fars News Agency reports the explosion occurred Saturday in the southern city of Shiraz. The agency said the death toll was expected to rise because some of the wounded were in a critical condition.

No one has claimed responsibility for the blast and no details were given on how the bomb was set off.

A provincial official (Mohammad Reza Hadaegh) said the cause of the blast is under investigation.

Fars reported the mosque’s cleric had been preaching against Wahhabism — the ultra-conservative form of Sunni Islam practiced mostly in Saudi Arabia — and the outlawed Bahai faith.

Some information for this report provided by AFP and Reuters.
