Islamic Preacher Issues Fatwa Against Voting for Non-Muslims
August 21, 2008
The renowned Islamic preacher, Shaykh Muhammad Ahmad Hasan, has issued a fatwa banning Muslims from voting for non-Muslim candidates in presidential, parliamentary or any other elections that may give non-Muslims a supervisory role over Muslims.
Responding to questions by APA in Khartoum on Wednesday, Hasan however said if a Muslim was the national of a country where there were no Muslim candidates it was permissible to vote for whoever was the best and closest to addressing his problems and concerns.
Sudan is heading towards parliamentary and presidential elections next year and some politicians have been working to nominate non-Muslims and calling on Muslims to vote for them in the name of the “New Sudan”.
South Sudan president and vice president in Sudan’s government of national unity, Salva Kiir Mayardit, whom his party has nominated him to stand for the 2009 elections, is a Christian from South Sudan.
