Islamist Rebels Capture Another Town in Southern Somalia
May 19, 2008
The Islamist rebels of the Alshabab group have captured another town in southern Somalia, Jamaame (400km south of Mogadishu) on Monday morning without resistance.
This is the fourth town Alshabab has captured within four days in the Lower Jubba and Middle Jubba regions (south).
They seized Kamsuma ,the provincial capital of Lower Jubba, on Sunday. This town was managed by clan militias backed by the government soldiers who were said to have swiftly ran away before the Islamists reached the town.
On Saturday, Islamist insurgents overran the important town of Jillib in Jubba region, 40km south of Mogadishu.
Two days before, they also captured Dinsor, about 60km north of Baidoa, the base of the Somali parliament.
Somalia had been plunged in anarchy after the overthrow of President Mohamed Siad Barre in 1991, when warlords used their clan based militias to overthrow him then fight each other for power.
