Israel Airstrike Kills 5 Hamas Militants in Gaza

December 1, 2007

An Israeli airstrike in the Gaza strip has killed at least five members of the Palestinian militant group Hamas. Palestinian sources said the attack happened early Saturday near the southern Gaza town of Khan Younis. The Israeli military said it had conducted an operation against militants in Gaza.

On Friday, Israel’s Supreme Court upheld a government decision to reduce fuel supplies to the Gaza Strip, but ordered the government to postpone a planned cutoff of electricity service to the Palestinian territory.

Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni says the fuel cuts are aimed at pressuring Palestinian militants in Gaza to stop firing homemade (Kassam) rockets into southern Israel. Others, however, including Palestinian analyst Mahdi Abdel Hadi, who spoke to VOA, say such sanctions will spark more violence instead of stopping rocket attacks.

Israeli officials say fuel supplies to Gaza have been cut by about 13 percent since last month. The Palestinians say the true figure is three times as high.
