Israeli-Nigerian Firm to Build US$10m Solar Energy Plant

As Nigeria battles with its worst electricity supply bottlenecks in the last decade, an Israeli-Nigerian firm has concluded plans to build a US$10-million solar energy plant in Nigeria to generate electricity.

A representative of the Israel-Nigeria Cooperative Company, Mr Doron Shimoni, told journalists Monday in Abuja that the irregular power problem in Nigeria should be addressed so that Nigeria could achieve rapid economic growth.

”In the era of global warming and climate change, Nigeria ought not to rely exclusively on fossil fuel,” he said.

The facilitator of the project in Nigeria, Mr Anthony Ohia-Ezukpo, said the company planned to invest more than US$100 million in the Nigerian economy in the next year.

He said that the investment would cut across key sectors such as agriculture, energy, health and construction, thereby creating some 10,000 new jobs.

”There is a lot Nigeria and Israel can do together in the areas of agriculture, energy, medicine and construction.

”Israel will provide the technical expertise for all the projects we will be executing,” he said.

He said that the company had studied the Nigerian economy carefully and identified key areas where foreign investment could be effectively deployed to assist Nigeria realize its development program known as the Vision 2020 initiative.
