May 22, 2008

An Israeli scientist, who also has American citizenship, and one of the passengers involved on Tuesday evening’s mini bus explosion in Addis Ababa, died from his wounds on Thursday, the police have disclosed.

Commander Demsash Hailu, the public relations head of the Ethiopian federal police told APA that the Israeli expert on elephants died on Thursday while undergoing treatment in the Ethiopian capital.

According to Commander Hailu, the number of people killed in the mini bus explosion has reached six, the three died instantly during the explosion while the other three died on Wednesday and Thursday in a hospital.

The Israeli, Professor Yehezkel Shoshani, 65, was said to be a world-renowned specialist in elephant science. He was said to have dedicated his life to the study of elephants.

The repatriation of Shoshani’s body is being handled by the US consul general in Addis Ababa.

For eight years, he studied elephant communities in Eritrea, and moved to Ethiopia last year to teach at the University of Addis Ababa.

Shoshani dedicated a lifetime of work to preserving Ethiopia’s declining population of elephants in a national park near the Eritrean border.

Police describe the explosion as a “terrorist act”.

The mini bus explosion occurred as it was traveling between the Hilton Hotel and the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry in Addis Ababa.

It is the latest in a series of terror attacks the Ethiopian capital, which the government has blamed on extremists who are supported by neighboring Eritrea.

Nobody has however so far claimed responsibility so far for this explosion.

Police continues investigating the case.
