Italian Court Deems ‘Friday’ Too Odd for Legal First Name

December 19, 2007

An Italian couple who named their son ‘Venerdi’ - which means ‘Friday’ in Italian - was ordered by a court on Wednesday to give the child a different name, national media reported.

“We named him Friday because we like the sound of the name,” said the boy’s mother, Mara Germano, adding that she would have also named a girl ‘Friday’.

The 15-month-old boy had lived almost five months called ‘Friday’ until city officials deemed his name be changed to a less “ridiculous or shameful” one.

The tribunal cited an administrative norm designed to protect a child’s dignity by preventing parents from giving them odd first names.

Most Italians consider Friday to be an unlucky day. It is also the name of a character in Daniel Defoe’s most famous novel, Robinson Crusoe.

A young Chinese couple recently applied to name their newborn boy after the typographic symbol ‘@,’ because when read aloud in English it sounds like the Chinese for “I love him.”

A New Zealand couple recently attempted to call their son ‘4real,’ but settled for ‘Superman’ when their application was rejected.
