The Ivorian Constitutional Council has proposed its “collaboration” and “cooperation” with the former Ivorian “Forces Nouvelles” (New Forces) rebels who have been controlling the northern half of the country since September 2002.
“We have come here to present the constitutional council in its new configuration. Secondly, we have come to offer our collaboration to the “Forces Nouvelles”, Professor Paul Yao N’dré, the president of the institution, said.
From the standpoint of our respective missions, he said “there are data that elude us. So we have come to offer them our cooperation”.
Explaining that the constitutional council is both on an upstream and down-the-line process to end the crisis through elections, he said he came to present the role of his institution to the “Forces Nouvelles”.
“The Forces Nouvelles can help us in collecting the required information from the ground during the election and the posting of results” Professor N’dré further said, making a call not to jeopardize the endeavors through bad elections.
The constitutional council has recently released a list of 14 candidates selected for the next presidential election which was postponed last Sunday for the sixth time because of delays in the electoral process.
The actors in the Ivorian crisis will meet Thursday in Ouagadougou with the facilitator Blaise Compaoré to try to set a new date in the light of proposals to be made by the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
