Japan Grants 1.9 Billion Yen in Aid to Sri Lanka

December 10, 2007

Japan will officially approve economic assistance of 1.9 billion yen in grants-in-aid to Sri Lanka next week to promote peace and mid- to long-term economic development and to eradicate poverty in the country. Japanese Foreign Minister Masahiko Komura made the anouncement when he met President Mahinda Rajapaksa today in Tokyo.

President Rajapaksa informed the Japanese Foreign Minister that the Sri Lankan government expects to conclude at an early date a draft on a power sharing agreement to resolve the conflict in the country.

The president expressed hope for Japan’s support in the construction of electricity power plants fueled by liquefied natural gas and multi- purpose development projects in eastern province, recently liberated from terrorist activity.

The President also conveyed Sri Lanka’s support for Japan’s call for the reform of the United Nations and in its bid for a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council.
