The Japanese government has donated 11 vehicles and three boats to the Tanzania government that will be used by the national police and immigration department to strengthen internal security operations in the country.
Speaking at the handing over ceremony in Dar es Salam on Wednesday, the minister of Internal Affairs, Shamsi Vuai Nahodha said the Japanese government’s overture was indicative of the strategic significance of its partnership with Tanzania, a relation which spans many sectors.
“The Japanese government is our long term partner contributing a lot to our country’s development” Nahodha said adding that it has also helped to facilitate the return of 912 Ethiopian migrants who were detained in Tanzanian prisons by covering the costs of their travel and other expenses.
Japan’s ambassador Masaki Okada said his country has donated the vehicles through its comprehensive humanitarian assistance to help in the welfare of irregular migrants in the country with a cost of $2.4 million.
“I believe that the donated boats will contribute to improving Tanzania’s security” Mr Okada said before challenging the government to strengthen security activities in all parts of the country in order to improve peace and tranquillity which had existed for decades since its independence.
Japan has been supporting Tanzania in upgrading road infrastructure, agriculture, water and other development priorities.
