Japanese Government Gives Grant To Help Improve Sri Lankan Hospital
March 5, 2008
The Government of Japan has provided a grant of 104 million Japanese Yen (approximately Rs. 103 million) under its Grant Aid Program for the preparation of detailed designs to improve the curative healthcare facilities of Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital in Sri Lanka.
The Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital is the main hospital in the North Central region and the third largest hospital in Sri Lanka.
The detailed design is expected to be completed in five months and once this is done a further grant is expected to be provided by the Government of Japan for the construction of a new three storied building with a floor area of around 7,500 square meters to house the Obstetric Gynaecology Operation Theatre, Paediatric Unit (Intensive Care Unit) and the Outdoor Patients’ Department (OPD) along with necessary equipment.
The hospital will thus be transformed into a fully-fledged healthcare facility with modern equipment through these improvements and construction of other supportive infrastructure.
Improved facilities at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital will provide better access to specialized healthcare services and thereby minimize difficulties faced by patients who travel long distances to obtain such services from other tertiary healthcare institutions.
Over 1.3 million people who are residing in the Anuradhapura District and the adjoining districts of Vavuniya, Mannar, Trincomalee and Puttalam where the healthcare facilities are comparatively poor, will directly benefit from this project.
The Project will be implemented by the Ministry of Healthcare and Nutrition and is expected to be completed by early 2010.
