Kenya Minister Criticizes US Diplomat for Threatening Remarks
January 31, 2008
Kenya Justice and Constitution Affairs Assistant Minister Danson Mungatana on Thursday hit out at the United States top diplomat for African Affairs Jendayi Frazer for saying that a solution from outside the country will be imposed on Kenya if it does resolve its political crisis.
Mungatana warned the US not to interfere with Kenya’s internal affairs.
Speaking in Addis Ababa on Wednesday where she was attending the African Union summit, Frazer threatened that foreign countries may impose a solution on Kenya to end the post-election crisis if its leaders fail to reach a workable settlement.
Addressing reporters in Nairobi, Mungatana said Frazer should stop threatening Kenya, saying her comments undermined Kenya’s democratic integrity.
He said any foreign solution imposed in Kenya will not work.
He said the US should first give a chance to the mediation effort led by former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to find a lasting solution to the crisis.
Mungatana added that Kenyan leaders are mature enough to resolve the crisis internally and do not need any foreign solution.
“I see Frazer’s comments as threats, and they will not work,” he said.
