Kenya Opposition Urges AU to Impose Arms Embargo on Government

January 29, 2008

APA-Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) Kenya’s opposition Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) on Monday urged the African Union Commission to put pressure on Israel not to sell arms to the Kenya government led by Mwai Kibaki.

ODM officials led by secretary-general Peter Anyang’ Nyong’o said the Israeli government is supplying arms, including tear gas, to the Kenya government, which they claimed is responsible for the killing of over 1,500 people following post-election protests.

The officials claim that ODM won the December 27 presidential election in Kenya.

The post-election violence has claimed hundreds of lives.

On Sunday, the outgoing AU Commission chairperson Alpha Oumar Konare expressed his concern on the situation in Kenya.

“Now people are talking about genocide in Kenya. What are then the lessons learnt from the example of Rwanda?” he said at the gathering of African foreign ministers meeting in Addis Ababa.
