Kenya Seeks World Bank Support to Connect 1 Million to Electricity

April 27, 2008

Kenya is pursing discussions with the World Bank to fund a long-term project that will connect one million Kenyans to electricity by 2012, sources said.

Currently less than 10 percent of Kenyans have access to electricity, Energy minister Kiraitu who is heading the government team to the discussions said.

He told a press conference recently, that government was targeting to connect 20 percent of Kenyans to electricity in the next two years, but acquiesced that the country lacks the capacity to do so by itself.

Other modalities to increase electricity output to 500 Megawatts from the current 50 Megawatts in the next five years from alternative energy sources is also on top of the government energy priorities.

The majority Kenyans living in the rural areas without electricity are also included in the energy plan.
