Kenya is to host a regional fisheries expo that is expected to bring together diverse stakeholders in the fishing industry drawn from the East Africa sub-region.
The envisaged annual event to be held on a rotational basis within the eastern Africa region is being organized by Fishnet Africa, in partnership with Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO), an institution of the East African Community, mandated to conserve and manage fisheries resources within Lake Victoria.
“Concerted efforts by stakeholders in sustaining fisheries in East Africa have evolved from being a locally based initiative to a regional undertaking,” said the Executive Secretary of LVFO Dick Nyeko in Nairobi on Thursday.
“The Lake Victoria fisheries alone support over 2 million people and an annual fish consumption needs of almost 22 million people in the region, making a significant contribution to the regional food security and economy,” he added.
The event to be held from August 24-26 will bring together diverse stakeholders in the fishing industry to share information geared towards sustainability of the industry as well as provide an opportunity for networking and business transactions.
With its theme ; “Fishing for Prosperity”, the expo will feature amongst others ; conference sessions on topical issues, exhibitions by corporate bodies, academic institutions, government agencies ; fishing competitions, fish cooking demos and tours within Lake Victoria, said the organizers.
Exhibitors and delegates to the event are drawn from eastern African states, South Africa, China, India, Japan, Britain and Indonesia.
Among the sponsors of the Fishing Expo 2010 are LVFO (EAC), NEPAD (African Union), Shanghai Gehua Exhibition Services Co. (China), Fisheries University Network (AU) and PAF (AU).
Fishnet Africa is a private entity that promotes sustainable fishing industry in Africa through identification, generation and dissemination of fisheries information with an aim of disseminating relevant information.
