Kenyan Anglican Bishops to Boycott Lambeth Conference in Protest
February 16, 2008
The Anglican bishops in Kenya and other countries in Africa have announced their decision to boycott the Lambeth Conference, a meeting of the World Anglican Communion which takes place every ten years at the invitation of the Archbishop of Canterbury in London.
Speaking in Nairobi on Saturday, the Secretary of the Anglican Church in Kenya, Bishop Lawrence Dena said the decision was arrived at after intense meditation.
Instead, he said most of the dissenters will attend a rival Global Anglican Future conference organised by conservative evangelicals in Israel in June.
The controversy over the consecration of gay bishops by Episcopal of London Anglican church is splitting the church further and the bishops are giving the occasion a wide berth in protest at the liberal direction the Anglican Church is taking on homosexuality.
The Lambeth conference is a prestigious occasion when all bishops of the Anglican Church meet for worship, study and conversation.
The current Archbishop of Canterbury - Rowan Williams - has called the next Lambeth Conference for July 2008, but this has not been received well by Anglican bishops of the Anglican Church in Kenya and Uganda as they join Nigeria in boycotting the ten-yearly gathering insisting that it is in protest at the liberal direction the Anglican Church is taking on homosexuality.
