Following a vigorous campaign by the Kenya Delegation led by Minister of Education Prof. Sam Ongeri, Kenya’s candidate Prof. Jude Mathooko has been elected to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Culture Organization (UNESCO) Executive Board.
Mathooko has also been the President of UNESCO Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (IGBC) at UNESCO, spokesman for the foreign affairs ministry, Daniel Mokaya said in Nairobi on Friday.
Prof. Mathooko has published numerous papers in the field of natural sciences and brings a wealth of experience to the Board. He will serve on the Board for a period of 4 years.
The Executive Board is elected by Member States during the General Conference. The Executive Board examines UNESCO’s Programme of work and corresponding Budget estimates.
The Board also ensures the effective and rational execution of the program by the Director-General.
Other African countries were also elected to serve on the Board,Mokaya said.
