Kenyan Leader Invites President Kufuor to Mediate in Post-election Crisis

January 5, 2008

Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, has invited President John Agyekum Kufuor of Ghana and current African Union (AU) chairman to Kenya next week to enable him to gather first hand information about the political situation in the east African country following the post-election violence.

This came to light on Saturday when Mr Moses Wetangula, special envoy of Kibaki delivered a special message to President Kufuor in Kumasi, Ghana’s second largest city on Saturday.

According to Wetangula, President Kibaki extended an invitation to the AU chairman in order to know how best the AU could mediate in the political crisis in Kenya.

He hinted that Kibaki was prepared to form a government of national unity in Kenya as a way of ending the political impasse which resulted from the post-election violence that had already claimed more than 300 lives.

The invitation of President Kufuor came three days after the Kenyan authorities refused to allow the AU chairman to visit the country claiming that it was inappropriate, thus causing embarrassment to the Ghanaian leader.

President Kufuor however had accepted the invitation and promised to fly to Nairobi, the Kenya capital next week.

Mr Wetangula was accompanied by Franklin Esipila, the Kenyan ambassador to Ethiopia and Ms Severin Luyali of the Kenyan Foreign Affairs ministry.
