Kenyan MPs Pass Crucial Bills for Power Sharing Gov’t

March 19, 2008

Kenya’s members of parliament on Tuesday afternoon passed a crucial bill that will legalize a historic power-sharing pact signed between President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister-designate, Raila Odinga, barely a month after a power sharing deal was brokered between the two principals by the former United Nations Secretary General, Koffi Annan.

Following debates after the second reading by the house in Nairobi, the bill will await presidential Assent after which it will be enacted into law paving the way for a Grand Coalition.

The debate on the Constitution of Kenya Amendment Bill 2008 was initiated by Justice and Constitution Affairs Minister Martha Karua who asked the legislators to pass the bill for the sake of peace.

The bill was unanimously passed and will introduce the posts of Prime Minister and two deputy prime ministers.

President Kibaki is also expected to expand his cabinet once the bill, alongside the National Accord and Reconciliation Bill 2008 become law.

In his address to the house, the President also rallied parliament to pass a new constitution in the next 12 months.
