125px-Flag_of_Kenya.svgKenyan President Mwai Kibaki has appointed Mathew Iteere as the new Police Commissioner, prior to which he was serving as the Commandant of the General Service Unit in the police force.

Major General Hussein Ali, the former police chief has been moved to the Postal Corporation of Kenya as its Chief Executive Officer/ Postmaster General, said a presidential statement issued in Nairobi.

Ali’s tenure was marred by extra-judicial killings of over 500 members of the outlawed Mungiki gang in 2007 and also brutal police killings and human rights violations that were witnessed during last year’s post-election violence.

The international community, civil society and other lobby groups have named Ali as one of the key officials that were a stumbling block to reforms in the police force.

The appointment has been viewed as initial steps by the government to bring reforms in the police force that has recently been named by Transparency International as the most corrupt institution in the country.
