Kenyan Students in Uganda Hold Protest Against Discrimination
November 6, 2008
Uganda police on Wednesday dispersed Kenyan students at Makerere University who were attempting to set fire to the main electricity transformer at the campus in the capital Kampala.
Makerere university guild president, Robert Rutaro said on Thursday that a group of about 10 students were found by police with a jerry-can of paraffin at the transformer attempting to set it on fire. They dispersed them and they escaped into their halls of residence.
The Kenyan students, who number about 600, had been demonstrating on the campus.
The Kenyans, who form the biggest number of foreign students, have been protesting against discrimination in the payment of university fees. They are required to pay fees in US dollars while locals pay in local currency.
