Kyrgyzstan: Opposition Party Leader Seeks Political Asylum
August 12, 2008
Leader of the Kyrgyzstan Patriotic Party Nazarbek Nyshanov says he is being persecuted by Kyrgyz authorities for his political activism, which forces him to seek asylum abroad, 24.kg reports.
Nyshanov has been recently arrested and charged with embezzlement of 250 thousand Kyrgyz soms, or 7,000 US dollars.
Nyshanov denies any wrongdoing and says the charges were brought to prevent him and his party from organizing a national gathering Kurultai, when various political forced would have discussed the current critical economic situation and possible impeachment to President Kurmanbek Bakiev.
This is the second time Nyshanov faces a prison term. Political activist says this could only be interpreted as dissidents’ political persecution by the Kyrgyz authorities.
